Duda Penteado: Beauty for Ashes

Since 2001, Duda Penteado has been considering the consequences of September 11, 2001, in the face of the increasing globalization developing since the 1980s. Beauty for Ashes represents his re-consideration of some of the key elements of this topic, six years later. For this exhibit, held in the Project Gallery, the artist worked for three weeks on a colossal wall drawing for the longest walls in the exhibition space. Articles, notes, images, preparatory sketches, personal logs and drawings that were critical to the creation of the final piece will be included in the show.

A resident of Jersey City, Brazilian artist Penteado works in what has been called “the modern tradition of the arts of Brazil.” In addition to painting, Penteado’s artistic productions include printmaking and sculpture made from found objects. He modeled his own reaction to 9/11 on Picasso’s Guernica, which was Picasso’s reaction to the bombing of a Spanish Village during the Spanish Civil War.

Traditionally considered to be women’s work for household consumption, knitting, crocheting and lace-making have proven to be remarkably creative pursuits. Those who take a closer look at the work that skilled women artisans have created over the centuries will have noted the fine art of this craft. A trip to the Museum of Arts and Design in New York will convince even those who have never considered the beauty of needlework to marvel at how contemporary artists are transforming these media. Forty works include some very unexpected fiber-art productions, from miniatures to video installations to performance. The 27 featured artists, representing both genders and a wide range of ages and nationalities, demonstrate how traditional materials and methods are being reinvented in surprising and very modern ways.

A full-color, 120-page exhibition catalogue discusses the artists and their works.

Linda Rose: Figuratively Speaking

In her first solo exhibition, Figuratively Speaking, Linda Rose presents a collection of mixed media over gelatin-silver prints. By combining painting techniques with the traditional photographic process, Linda makes use of a new approach in examining the nude figure.

The works, displaying a full gamut of colour and texture, relate to the artist’s experience of photographing the studio nude. Some prints hold thick layers of paint and medium while on others the paint brush and palette knife merely flirt with the surface.

Linda Rose was born and raised in New York. She currently works from her art studio, on the other side of the East River, in Long Island City. She studied painting and photography at the School of Visual Arts and completed additional art workshops and courses at NYU, FIT and the Art Students League. Linda has participated in several group exhibitions around the country.
